Model not responding? Three dots or blank response?
If your assistant shows three dots that never finish, a blank reply, or simply does not respond, the cause is almost always one of the following.
If your assistant shows three dots that never finish, a blank reply, or simply does not respond, the cause is almost always:
- No credits or billing - You have an API key but haven't added credit or enabled billing with Anthropic or OpenAI. Go to each provider's Billing section and add a payment method or prepaid credit (see Get your LLM API key for links).
- Key not set or wrong - The API key wasn't added to OpenClaw correctly, or it
was revoked. Re-add your key via Onboard (or
openclaw onboard --section envif self-hosted) and ensure the key is valid in the provider's console.
Fix: Add credit or enable billing for your chosen provider (Anthropic and/or OpenAI), then ensure your API key is set in OpenClaw. After that, try your message again.
